YOUtopia 41 Original Course Intro:
Dear students,
this semester we will perform the project called YOUtopia 41 in which you can develop your own individual YOUtopias to the question: How will we live in 20 years?
This is the prevailing global challenge in light of the worsening climate crisis and its destructive effects on all aspects of our lives. It can be formulated in your YOUtopias as speculative fabulations, archaeologies into alternative futures, utopias, dystopias, or as concrete proposals.
In preparation for your YOUtopias, we are delving into scientific and artistic perspectives. First, I will report on a Berlin Senate project that is recording the holdings of so-called human remains from Berlin institutions. With this concrete example and with an introduction to the working methods of the group Forensic Architecture we get to know alternative methods of production, storage and distribution of knowledge.
We gain another perspective through the film: „The Earth Destroyers“. Based on the film, we discuss a variety of scenarios: how will we communicate, interact socially, celebrate, travel, work, eat, sleep in 20 years? Under what conditions will we live our lives?
After these shared critical analyses, we immerse into the micro-levels of our current existence. You receive microscopes with which you can examine your very closest surroundings. Our excursions into meta-, macro- and micro-levels are the basis for your artistic and design transformations, for which you can use all imaginable means or media. I will teach YOUtopia 41 together with my assistant Mano Leyrado, who studies sculpture at the khb.

Liebe Studierende,
in diesem Semester werden wir das Projekt YOUtopia 41 durchführen: hier entwickelt ihr eure eigenen, individuellen YOUtopias zur Frage: Wie werden wir in 20 Jahren leben?
Angesichts der sich verschärfenden Klimakrise und deren destruktiven Auswirkungen auf alle Bereiche unseres Lebens ist dies eine globale Herausforderung. Sie kann in euren YOUtopias als spekulative Fabulationen, Archäologien in alternative Zukünfte, Utopien, Dystopien oder als konkrete Vorschläge künstlerisch oder gestalterisch formuliert werden.
Als Vorbereitung für die YOUtopias erschließen wir wissenschaftliche und künstlerische Perspektiven. Zunächst berichte ich euch von einem Berliner Senatsvorhaben, welches die Bestände der sogenannten Human remains aus den Berliner Institutionen erfasst. Mit diesem konkreten Beispiel und mit einer Einführung in die Arbeitsweisen der Gruppe Forensic Architecture lernen wir alternative Methoden der Produktion, Speicherung und Weitergabe von Wissen kennen.
Eine weitere Perspektive gewinnen wir durch den Film: „Die Erdzerstörer“. Auf Grundlage des Films diskutieren wir unterschiedlichste Szenarien: wie werden wir in 20 Jahren kommunizieren, sozial interagieren, feiern, reisen, arbeiten, essen, schlafen? Unter welchen Bedingungen werden wir durchs Leben gehen?
Nach diesen gemeinsamen kritischen Analysen werden wir in die Mikro-Ebenen unserer derzeitigen Existenz eintauchen. Ihr erhaltet Mikroskope, mit denen ihr eure allernächste Umgebung untersuchen könnt.
Unsere Exkurse in Meta,- Makro- und Mikroebenen sind die Grundlage für eure künstlerischen und gestalterischen Transformationen, für die ihr alle Mittel, Genres und Medien nutzen könnt. Youtopia 41 unterrichte ich gemeinsam mit meinem Assistenten Mano Leyrado, der an der khb Bildhauerei studiert.
