Sci-Fi Anatomies Original Course Intro:

Dear students,

this semester we will be looking at Sci-Fi Anatomies, but not following the conventional stereotypes of science fiction. Instead, we will examine the two areas of „science“ and „fiction“, whereupon you will be able to design your own individual Sci-Fi Anatomies in this course.

This will be based on a crash course in human, historical, and cultural anatomies, in which we will simultaneously examine social inscriptions (racism, sexism, ableism, beauty ideals) to which our bodies are subjected.

We then take a look at current scientific practices of synthetic biology and encounter notions of recombination and mutation, the clone, hybrid, cybrid, and cyborg. In addition, we examine inter-individual connections such as symbiosis, parasitism, and rhizome, as well as the use of the terms in philosophical or sociological theories. Finally, we turn to the mythological, cultural, and fantastical worlds of composite beings and critically examine the transitions between real and fictional realms.

You can realize your Sci-Fi-Anatomies-contributions as concrete drafts, utopian imaginations, dystopian constructions or speculative fabulations, whereby all means, genres and media are possible for the realization. With your contributions, a small, collective artistic Sci-Fi-Anatomy-Encyclopedia will be created during the winter semester.

I look forward to getting to know you – and your Sci-Fi Anatomies!

Liebe Studierende,
